Guanajuato, distinguished for being the only one in Mexico with two World Heritage Cities: San Miguel de Allende and Guanajuato Capital, participated in the Third Ordinary General Assembly of the National Association of Mexican World Heritage Cities AC.
During the session, significant progress was made in the conservation, rescue and promotion of these sites, considered essential drivers for the cultural and tourist development of the country.
This meeting reaffirms the mission of the People’s Government, promoted by Governor, Libia Dennise Garcia Munoz Ledo, to protect and promote cultural heritage, consolidating it as a pillar of sustainable development for tourism and national pride.
Representing Lupita Robles Leon, Secretary of Tourism and Identity, David Ayala Saucedo, General Director of Tourism Development, stressed that these cities are not only a source of pride for the State, but also represent a unique opportunity to strengthen the local economy and preserve an invaluable cultural legacy.
“Our commitment as guardians of cultural heritage goes beyond promoting tourism; we seek to preserve the living memory of our communities and project it to the world,” said Ayala Saucedo.
San Miguel de Allende and Guanajuato City, recognized by UNESCO in 2008 and 1988 respectively, are icons of history and architectural beauty.
San Miguel de Allende has established itself as an international reference for its unique cultural atmosphere
Guanajuato is a living testimony to the mining wealth and viceregal art that forged the identity of the Bajío.
Both cities are part of the Camino Real de Tierra Adentro, a cultural itinerary that reaffirms the importance of Guanajuato in the global context.
“Mexico is a country of extraordinary historical, cultural and natural treasures. Guanajuato, as the only State with two heritage cities, represents a clear example of how cultural heritage can be a driver of economic and tourism development. San Miguel de Allende and Guanajuato Capital are not only renowned tourist destinations, but are living symbols of our cultural identity, and as such, we must continue working to preserve and promote them for future generations,” said David Ayala.
The Municipality of Guanajuato presented the study of Tourist Charges, a comprehensive analysis that covers environmental, social and economic dimensions to ensure sustainable development of its destinations.
In addition to Guanajuato, the event brought together representatives from heritage cities such as Mexico, San Luis de la Paz, Zacatecas, Durango, Morelia and Queretaro, who also shared initiatives in the conservation of tangible and intangible heritage, sustainable tourism promotion and support for service providers and local producers in each site.
This AC, with the World Heritage Cities, will continue working to preserve their historic centres in terms of tangible and intangible heritage.
