With a collection of more than 150 pieces that make it the first venue specifically dedicated to ancient Chinese art in Latin America, the Conde Rul Museum opened its doors to the Alar Chinese Art Collection in Guanajuato City.

The emblematic building located in the Plaza de la Paz, built in the early 19th century as one of the last noble houses in the city and converted into a museum in 2018, is now home to the collection built over four decades by Jaime Arturo Coste Setien and Alain Giberzstein, who have donated it to the people of Guanajuato.

The collection focuses on the periods of the last two Chinese imperial dynasties:

  • The Ming (1368-1644)
  • The Qing (1644-1912) and has been divided into 10 rooms, its museographic project was led by Jose Enrique Ortiz Lanz, one of the most renowned specialists in this field in Mexico

After the Introductory Room, porcelain occupies the next seven rooms, which are dedicated to presenting its general features and dividing it by colour:

  • The original white
  • Polychrome
  • Porcelain mounted on metal
  • The two remaining rooms are devoted to painting, furniture and applied arts and to traditional symbols and elements

The museographic concept rescues the dignity and cleanliness of the neoclassical architecture to which the building refers, with a contemporary touch, and at the same time incorporates elements of the modern museum experience, with various interactive screens.

Adriana Camarena de Obeso, director of the State Institute of Culture, highlighted that with this collection, the Conde Rul Museum with the Alar Chinese Art Collection acquires “a new vocation towards the research, dissemination and conservation of art originated in the Far East; a region that since the vice-regal era, through the Nao de China, maintained a strong link with New Spain and the sources of its prosperity, such as Guanajuato”.
