A tiny visitor caused quite a stir in the community of Potrerillos this past Sunday. Following a 911 call from a concerned neighbor, local authorities rescued a baby otter that is now safely under the care of the Leon Aquarium. Eventually, federal authorities will take over to ensure the otter makes a successful comeback to its natural habitat.
The rescue was handled with high priority, as the trade of these animals is considered a federal offense. These otters are often targets of the black market and are highly protected, being the only species of their kind found in the region.
The little guy, a male pup estimated to be between 2 and 3 months old, spent Sunday keeping hydrated under the watchful eye of rescuers. On Monday afternoon, he was officially transferred to the Leon Aquarium, located in the Altacia shopping mall.
Edgar Fernandez Cisneros, Coordinator of Civil Protection in Purisima del Rincon, confirmed that the otter was received by Paola Santos, the aquarium’s aquatic sub-manager. The pup is currently undergoing a formal review by PROFEPA (the Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection), which will eventually coordinate with SEMARNAT (the Ministry of Environment) for his future release.
Upon arrival, the baby otter was examined by a veterinarian and sanitized before entering the facility. Staff will be monitoring his behavior closely; there’s even a possibility, if he adapts well, that he might temporarily stay near the penguin enclosure.
While the initial check-up shows he is in great shape and well-cared for, experts haven’t forgotten his roots. Since these otters belong in the wild, authorities are currently weighing whether it’s best to keep him for further observation or release him soon to ensure he doesn’t spend his life in captivity.
