The International Cervantino Festival –FIC-, one of the most important and prestigious cultural events in Latin America, announced the general program of its 51st edition.
The festival, which will be held from October 13 to 29, 2023, in the city of Guanajuato, Mexico, promises an unforgettable encounter with various world-renowned artistic disciplines.
The program of this edition of the FIC presents a variety of artists and activities from the United States of America and Sonora, guests of honor of this edition, and from 31 other countries. The attendees will have the opportunity to enjoy performances of dance, music, opera, theater and visual arts, which will reflect the richness and cultural diversity of these nations.
The federal Secretary of Culture, Alejandra Frausto Guerrero, highlighted the importance of this edition of the FIC allowing us to discover the deep roots that exist and are shared between the United States and Mexico, as well as the ties between both nations through migrations.
“Cultures are united regardless of a border, there are cultural expressions that we could sometimes confuse if we are in the north of Mexico or in the south of the United States, because they are prior to the political divisions and that has to make clear to us the strength of the cultural roots that we celebrate today”, said Frausto.
To present this program, said Frausto, “puts us in a different spirit, we begin to look for the roads to Guanajuato… here are the stages open to all audiences and all cultures.”
The governor of Guanajuato, Diego Sinhue Rodriguez Vallejo, said during the presentation of the FIC: “Thank you all who make this great festival possible; I invite you to join us in the month of October to live the magic and the Cervantino experience in a unique place, such as Guanajuato. Long live Guanajuato! Long live Cervantes! Long live the Festival of the Spirit”.
Among the American artists who will join the 51 FIC stage, offering a diverse and captivating artistic proposal are:
- From the world of dance, Axis Dance Company; the Ballet Hispánico and the Dance Theater of Harlem, who will delight the public with their talent and passion in each movement.
In the musical field, artists such as:
- Arturo O’Farril and The Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra; Ensemble Mik Nawooj; Jennifer Koh and Vijay Iyer; Justin Kaufflin Trio; Ranky Tanky; The US Army Blues; and Trey McLaughlin and The Sounds of Zamar, with the Choir of the University of Guanajuato, among others, will offer an enriching and vibrant sound experience
“It is an honor that the United States participates for the first time as the guest of honor, especially during the Bicentennial year of diplomatic relations between our countries. Art and culture unite us and help us strengthen our ties, so the International Cervantino Festival will allow us to recognize the greatness of our nations and celebrate the ties that unite us. Mexico and the United States, are united forever”, said the ambassador of the United States of America, Ken Salazar.
While Sonora, one of the most vibrant states in Mexico, will offer an outstanding participation with artists such as:
- Antares Danza Contemporanea, Caloncho, the Sonora Philharmonic Orchestra with a tribute concert to Arturo Marquez, La Coyota, Simpson Ahuevo, Sugich, Margaritas Podridas, Lormiga Titeres, the Sonora State Symphonic Band, Jaime Florentino and many more
The Sonoran artists will bring with them the essence of their land through dance, music and theater, involving the public in an incomparable cultural journey.
Governor of Sonora, Alfonso Durazo, described, in his message through a video, as an extraordinary honor that Sonora has been chosen as the guest State to participate in the Cervantino, and reported that around 550 Sonoran artists will participate in 120 events.
The state of Guanajuato, host of the festival, will present an exceptional display of local talent with the Ballet Folklorico of the University of Guanajuato, the Music Band of the State of Guanajuato, the Guanajuato Opera Theater Company, the Symphony Orchestra of the University of Guanajuato and the University Theater of the University of Guanajuato, among other talents. Their participation in the festival will be a tribute to creativity and Guanajuato identity.
In his message, the general rector of the University of Guanajuato, Luis Felipe Guerrero Agripino, said: “A year ago we celebrated 50 years of the FIC, and on that occasion we embraced our cultural legacy of this great project, we expressed our legitimate pride for all that Guanajuato has given, Mexico and the world. Now it is up to us to start writing a new page for the International Cervantino Festival. Our festival was born to remain in continuous improvement. The FIC will always be a progressive, unfinished project, in this sense it is up to us to open ourselves to the current world, not deny our past glories. On the contrary, the best way to honor what our ancestors have done is to strive to do better.”
The General Director of Cultural Promotion and Festivals and in charge of the General Directorate of International Affairs, Mariana Aymerich Ordonez, gave special recognition to the embassies that have joined this year and have always prioritized culture as a bridge of understanding between nations. And she stressed that it is important to make visible the message that Mondiacult transmitted: all artistic expressions of all nationalities are welcome in Mexico, and especially in this festival.
