Guanajuato and Brussels share their mutual traditions in Ephemeral Art

In the 50 years of celebration of ‘The Flower Carpet’, Guanajuato is a special guest with the artistic talent of carpet makers from Uriangato to make a monumental carpet.
In the Great Central Square of Brussels the replica of the first carpet made in 1971 shines radiantly, with the image of Saint Michael the Archangel, Patron Saint of Brussels and Uriangato.
This is part of the Assumption Day celebrations, which this year are celebrated from August 12 to the 15, and volunteers and specialists from the world’s Ephemeral Art gathered at the Great Central Square in Brussels to create this great work.
“We feel very happy and proud that this great team from Uriangato represents Guanajuato with such dignity, with the tradition, joy and culture of our State,” said Governor of Guanajuato Diego Sinhue Rodriguez Vallejo.
Roo Aguilar Aguado, carpet maker from Uriangato and member of the Organizing Committee La Octava Noche Uriangato, AC, and designer Koen Vondenbusch, Technical Director and member of the Board of Directors of The Flower Carpet Brussels, contributed their talent to recreate a monumental carpet of 1,680 square meters, similar to the one created 50 years ago by the Belgian artist, Etinne Stautemas.
This rug is made with flowers and colored sawdust, where the ‘Arabesques’ stand out, which are elegant ornaments designed by Stautemas especially for this rug and which were recreated today, with a contemporary look, by Aguilar and Vondenbusch, after more than 280 hours work on the reconstruction of the tapestry design.
Roo Aguilar thanked the Governor of Guanajuato, Diego Sinhue Rodriguez Vallejo, for his support for the culture of Guanajuato and for the support to young creators. Roo said that “it is important to fight for your dreams, because with love and hope it is possible to accomplish what one sets out to do”.
Roo calle don young Guanajuatenses to make an everyday effort and take advantage of the opportunities that come for what they do.
“I am very happy to represent my City, my State and my Country and my traditions, and because carpet makers from Uriangato could come here and be able to make this carpet on the most important Ephemeral Art stage in the world”, said Roo.
“For us it is like the Olympics for athletes”, said the designer after the inauguration of the work in the Capital of the European Union.
