Every year producers in Guanajuato increase the production of honey
Celaya/Gto News
Beekeeping in Guanajuato is getting stronger year after year, in production, beekeepers and professionalization, with the support of the State Government. Between 2023 and 2022 alone, 43 more tons of honey were produced.
The Ministry of Agriculture reported that growth in production is constant every year and has continued to rise since 2019.
The numbers in production:
- In 2023, 735 tons of honey were produced
- With a production value of $38’189,888 pesos
- In 2022, 692 tons of honey were produced
- With a production value of $35’790,528 pesos
The municipalities with the highest production are:
- Leon, with 171 tons
- San Francisco del Rincón and Apaseo el Alto with 61 tons each
- Celaya and Comonfort with 50 tons each
Guanajuato beekeeping is made up of approximately:
- 36,869 hives
- 1,228 apiaries
- 409 beekeepers
It is a subsector of livestock farming that generates a significant number of jobs and economic benefits for Guanajuato.
To promote this, the People’s Government provides support in three different aspects. The first, through productive projects, with the delivery of queen bees; bee nuclei; breeding chambers; honey-saving trays; decrystallizers; electric extractors; uncapping benches, as well as fructose.
Support is also provided in Training and Technical Assistance, through four groups with 80 members each, on issues of management, health, nutrition, genetics, reproduction, transformation, added value, among other.
It also supports animal health through treatment against varroasis, a campaign against the small hive beetle and through training and dissemination to prevent bee collapse. Along with the growth in production, beekeepers are expected to be a key player in the care and protection of bees and, therefore, in the balance of ecosystems.
