“Just as there are closets that store things, there are closets that store souls and one of the largest we have is Jose Alfredo Jimenez”, said Juan Villoro as he presentated the book “When I talk to you about love and illusions”, by Paloma Jimenez Galvez.
The presentation was held this Friday night, within the programming of Guanajuato as a guest state of the 44th International Book Fair of the Mining Palace.
The king of ranchera music demonstrated his convening power almost 50 years after his death, in one of the most attended editorial presentations of the day that combined the comments of Jimenez Gálvez, Villoro, Adriana Camarena and Mauricio Vazquez, with live performance by the Guanajuato jazz trio Orozco Mata Garcia.
Published with the Ediciones La Rana label, from the Guanajuato State Institute of Culture –IEC-, “Cuando te hable de amor y de ilusiones” is an investigation into the lyrical dimension of the songs of Jose Alfredo Jimenez, prepared by his daughter, Paloma Jimenez Galvez, with the tools of philosophy and literary theory, as part of her graduate studies in Hispanic Letters.
“Jose Alfredo is the philosopher of the people,” commented Adriana Camarena de Obeso, director of the IEC, in her speech. “Someone who, with great emotion and wisdom, wrote lyrics that allow the majority of Mexicans to feel reflected in a collective mirror, which also makes us see the paradox that lives in our being.”
Juan Villoro, who is also the book’s foreword, placed Jose Alfredo Jimenez among the greatest composers in Mexico, along with Agustin Lara, Armando Manzanero and Juan Gabriel.
“But of these four, the one who has penetrated the intricacies of the heart the deepest is, without a doubt, the thinker of Dolores, because his sentimental repertoire is vast: from letting all go to the unlove and longing. The greatest of problems and the most wonderful of all, which is love, Jose Alfredo knew how to understand in an exceptional way”, said Villoro.
