Governor leads the presentation of the Compatibility Map of agave cultivation in Guanajuato

The State Government promotes actions to strengthen the Guanajuato tequila industry, and that it is also sustainable and sustained and that it is produced without deforesting land.
Diego Sinhue Rodriguez Vallejo led the presentation of the Compatibility Map of agave cultivation in Guanajuato for the sustainability of the tequila sector.
The Governor recalled that a little over a year ago, in this place, commitments were signed to promote the State’s tequila sector, working with the Government of Jalisco and the Tequila Regulatory Council, institutional cooperation schemes were agreed to contribute.
“We are going to continue supporting it so that it is a strong industry, but also sustainable, that it is a benchmark of how economic development can coexist with the environment,” said the Governor.
Rodriguez Vallejo said that for Guanajuato, the production of agave is a priority issue. This activity has had an important growth in recent years in Guanajuato.
The State produces:
- 13.62% of the agave at the national level
- 20% of the value of national production.
There are more than 43 thousand hectares in 7 municipalities, and more than 4 thousand producers in Guanajuato, said teh Governor.
A booming sector
“One of the commitments of the Cooperation Agreement between Jalisco, Guanajuato and the Tequila Regulatory Council is being fulfilled. I thank the Secretary of the Environment, Marisa Ortiz Mantilla, for the presentation of the compatibility map for agave production in Guanajuato, for the sustainability of the tequila sector,” said the Governor.
The map guarantees Mexico and the world that in Guanajuato we guarantee that tequila is made with agave grown in areas where deforestation does not occur.
Rodriguez Vallejo said that this work of SMAOT allows planning the expansion of plantations of Agave tequilana Weber blue variety, based on environmental criteria. This way, the care of forests, strategic ecosystems and areas of high conservation value is guaranteed.
Guanajuato has 7 municipalities with Denomination of Origin for the production of agave for tequila:
- Romita, Abasolo, Cueramaro, Huanimaro, Manuel Doblado, Penjamo and Purisima del Rincon.
The map presented establishes that 64.7% of the territory in the municipalities with Denomination of Origin is compatible for the cultivation of agave tequilana.
“It is a very important step in consolidating the development of the tequila sector. With this map, the foundations in Guanajuato’s tequila agave production are laid”, said the Governor.
