The People’s Government understands that traditional cuisine is also community, memory, pride and future; and supports those who preserve the flavor

The Governor of the People, Libia Dennise Garcia Munoz Ledo, led the Awards Ceremony of the 14th Edition of the Reunion of Traditional Cuisine of Guanajuato, which is organized by the Government of the People through the Secretary of Tourism and Identity (SECTURI).

“Surely many of you, when making that mole, those tamales and those homemade recipes, remember the family legacy that accompanies you today, and that is the same legacy that we have in Guanajuato, because each dish speaks not only of a family history, it also speaks of the history of our municipalities,” said the Governor.

This meeting recognizes traditional cooks as guardians of a heritage that is passed on in the family and in the community.

This year, the event takes place within the Guanajuato ¡Sí Sabe! 2026 Gastronomic Season, consolidating itself as a platform to preserve culinary heritage, strengthen the identity of the regions, and generate opportunities for those who live off their knowledge, products, and work.

Sixty traditional cooks from 40 municipalities participated in this event, they reached this stage after three preliminary rounds held in Canada de Caracheo, Cortazar (21 participants); Nuevo Chupicuaro, Acambaro (23); and Tierra Blanca (19).

A jury evaluated the most representative dishes, considering flavor, history, technique, local ingredients and cultural value of each recipe.

The competition included three categories:

  • Sweet
  • Savory
  • Lifetime Achievement

The first two recognize the richness of traditional cuisine in its various expressions; the third honors cooks with extensive experience in preserving and promoting traditions, including in national and international forums. Recognitions were presented to the top three places in the sweet and savory categories, as well as three special distinctions for Lifetime Achievement.

There was also a symbolic presentation of certificates for the Traditional Cuisine Competency Standard and a posthumous recognition of Don Jesus Cardenas, promoter of traditional Guanajuatense cuisine.

Libia proposed to the head of the Secretary of Tourism and Identity, Guadalupe Robles, that from now on the award for traditional cooks should bear the name of Jesus Cardenas, to recognize his career and as a way of paying tribute.

Present in this event were Maribel de la Rocha, State President of Canirac; local, State and entrepreneurial Officials; Traditional Cooks from different regions of the State and local and federal legislators.
