The bet is on economic autonomy of Guanajuatense women

The People’s Government has a shelter for women, their daughters, sons and companions in situations of critical violence

During the first semester, women will be trained in computing and herbalism

To help them achieve economic autonomy and prevent them from returning to environments of violence, the People’s Government is providing vocational training to women who needed to be sheltered in the Women’s Shelter, along with their daughters, sons and companions, due to the critical risk of violence they faced. 

Economic dependence is one of the main factors that force women to stay with their abusers or return after a period of separation.

According to the National Survey on the Dynamics of Relationships in Households (ENDIREH) 2021, in Guanajuato almost 3 out of 10 women have faced economic or patrimonial violence throughout their relationship. 

Therefore, through cross-cutting work between the Secretary for Women and the Guanajuato State Training Institute (IECA), they promote a training model specifically designed for the residents of the shelter.

For the first half of 2026, the training program includes workshops in Basic Computing and Herbalism. These new training programs aim to reduce the digital divide and promote sustainable entrepreneurship.

Itzel Balderas, Secretary for Women, explained that the support provided by the People’s Government does not end with physical protection, but also includes alternatives for these women to learn, find employment or start a business upon leaving the shelter. 

“True freedom begins when a woman knows she has the capacity and the possibility to support herself and her family, that is why we have set out to ensure that every woman who passes through or goes through the shelter has a technical profile that allows her to rebuild her life with dignity and security,” the official pointed out.

During the closing of 2025, the synergy with IECA allowed 30 women to be trained in “Residential Electrical Maintenance” and “Pastry Making”, obtaining official certifications. 

The shelter served 110 people, divided in 51 women and 59 companions, during 2025. So far in 2026, 17 women and 10 companions have been served. 

The People’s Government makes available to women in situations of violence throughout the State, this safe space where they can take refuge with their daughters and sons when their safety is at risk. 

There, comprehensive and confidential services are offered, including psychological care, legal advice, social support and assistance to strengthen their autonomy, always with a human rights approach and gender perspective.

The People’s Government reaffirms its commitment to the empowerment and financial autonomy of women; this effort seeks to prevent women from falling back into the cycle of violence.
