SEG provides education services to the children of day laborers in agriculture communities

In Dolores Hidalgo, El Ramillete is an example of vocation and commitment to inclusion

In the farming fields where day laborer families work for several months of the year, the dreams of migrant children also flourish.

One of these spaces of hope is the El Ramillete Migrant Education Center (CEM), located in Dolores Hidalgo, where education continues despite the constant movement of its students.

Aware of the reality experienced by these communities, the Secretary of Education of Guanajuato (SEG) has reaffirmed its commitment to support the children of migrant day laborers who work in the fields of Guanajuato. During his recent visit to the center, Education Secretary Luis Ignacio Sánchez Gómez recognized the efforts of teachers and families.

“Students in migrant situation deserve the same opportunities as anyone else. Their story and efforts commit us to support them with a sensitive, flexible, and dignified education,” reiterated the head of the Secretary of Education.

Through the Migrant Education Centers (CEM), the SEG provides education services to elementary school students who are migrant.

These centers are located in rural communities in Region I, such as:

  • El Ramillete, Badillo de Guadalupe, Jamaica, and Lady Mary in Dolores Hidalgo
  • Charco del Huizache in San Diego de la Union

The model is designed to provide education support during the stay of migrant families in Guanajuato, with adapted and flexible content taught by staff trained in mobility contexts.

The students come primarily from states such as Guerrero and Sinaloa, and the groups vary in size depending on the agricultural season, ranging from fewer than 150 students per semester. To facilitate their education, mobile classrooms are set up or school spaces are used outside of regular school hours.

Among the multi-grade classrooms at El Ramillete, the work of Rocio Ramirez Balderas stands out. She has been supporting the learning of these children on the move for almost seven years.

“It’s very satisfying for me that the children are here, leave, come back, and when they come back, they still have a little bit of what they took with them. It was striking to see how they came home from work and still had the spirit to go to class and do their homework. It’s admirable,” said Rocio.

Thanks to the National Migrant School Control System, the studies completed at these centers are officially valid and nationally recognized, allowing students to continue their education regardless of where they move. This model guarantees academic continuity, preventing falling behind and strengthening their retention in the education system.

Authorities and responsible of education toured the facilities, listened to teachers and students, and reiterated the commitment of the Government of the People to ensure that quality and compassionate education reaches every corner of Guanajuato, regardless of background or situation.
