In 2024, more than 500 seniors were supported in obtaining their visas

Guanajuato/Gto News

The Government of the People, through the Secretary of Human Rights, accompanied a group of 43 senior citizens from the municipalities of Doctor Mora, Penjamo, Uriangato, Leon, Abasolo, Huanimaro, and Cortazar to the United States Embassy in Mexico City to process their visas and visit their migrant children residing in the United States, whom they have not seen in over ten years.

Accompanied by personnel from the Secretary of Human Rights, these men and women, between 60 and 80 years old, arrived with their documents in hand to obtain legal permission to cross the border.

Among those benefited are Eloy and Leodegaria, who want to reunite with their three children, who emigrated undocumented some 30 years ago. “They left, and I didn’t know their childhood or their lives because they lived alone there,” said Leodegaria.

Eloy was recently diagnosed with a condition with an uncertain prognosis. At the end of the interview, he expressed his joy because his visa was approved. “And we’ll be able to go to Sacramento and Colorado to see them. Now I’ll be able to fulfill my dream of going to the United States”.

Patricio Bazaldua, originally from Doctor Mora, says his daughter is 25 years old and has four children, but because they don’t have documents, they can’t visit Mexico. “And that’s why I’m here, so I can visit them on the other side,” he says excitedly.

The Silver Miners program involves the SDH providing support and visa processing at the U.S. Embassy. In a second phase, it accompanies seniors who have been granted visas to the United States so they can spend 30 days with their children. Finally, the same staff brings them back to Guanajuato.

The program is operated with the support of migrant clubs, organizations of Guanajuatenses abroad, and municipalities.
