Guanajuato/Gto News

Guanajuato promotes the conservation of the migratory route of the Monarch Butterfly, thanks to the efforts of the Government and society, committed to documenting its passage of the insect through the State.

In recent years, Guanajuato has undertaken actions to monitor and conserve the monarch, through training and work with rural communities, schools and non-governmental organizations, dissemination and workshops to raise awareness of this important migratory phenomenon.

The project to monitor the monarch butterfly during its autumn migration to the forests of Michoacan and the State of Mexico, coming from Canada and the United States, has been documented since 2015, as it passes through Guanajuato as the final part of its migration.

The State Government, through the Secretary of Water and Environment, developed and updated the mobile application ‘Mi Monarca’ designed to record sightings and the route taken during its migratory route.

It allows you to record and share observations and quality data for the research that scientists are carrying out to better understand and protect this species.

Part of the information provided is the butterfly cycle, through photographs and information about:

  • Hibernation sites, routes, characteristics, similarity to other species, cultural importance and the migratory phenomenon

Available for IOS and Android, you can download the app at:

The monarch population has been reduced by 80%, it is wrong to say that it is close to extinction, it is the migration process that is at risk. What is in danger is migration, not the butterfly.

Among the causes that hinder the migration of the monarch butterfly are human activity, global warming, climate change, land use and illegal logging, since the extraction of forest resources in the hibernation area continues.

Monarch butterflies are the only insects that migrate for up to 2,500 kilometers to escape cold weather and begin hibernation. Only the fourth generation of monarch butterflies migrate, as the first three generations die after six weeks of emerging from their cocoons.

Monarch butterflies use several migratory routes:

  • Some travel through the area between the Pacific Ocean and the Rocky Mountains, towards the state of California
  • Those that arrive in Mexico come from the area between the Rockies and the Great Lakes, go down the Sierra Madre Oriental, enter the Altiplano through the lower mountains, crossing through Guanajuato to reach the states of Mexico and Michoacan
