“Las Meninas”, “The Garden of Delights”, “The Naked Maja” and other legendary works of art will be seen by passers-by through the extramural exhibit “The Museum del Prado in Guanajuato”, which began its tour of Guanajuato this Thursday the 14th.}
In a joint initiative with the Government of Guanajuato, through the State Institute of Culture, the renowned Spanish museum shares a look at its rich collection through this traveling exhibit with 56 life-size reproductions, which will tour the coming months in the cities of Celaya, Guanajuato, Irapuato and Leon.
Alameda Miguel Hidalgo, in Celaya, is the first phase of this exhibit that was inaugurated by Mayor of Celaya, Javier Mendoza Marquez; the director of the State Institute of Culture, Adriana Camarena de Obeso and Antonio Prats Mari, cultural and scientific advisor of the Spanish Embassy in Mexico.
Prats Mari noted that “The Prado Museum in Guanajuato” continues an outdoor exhibit project that began in 2011 and has been present in several Latin American cities. In Mexico, the exhibit has previously toured Mexico City, San Luis Potosi, Morelia and Queretaro, but it is the first time that any State presents it in several venues.
The exhibit is designed to provide an approach to the main masterpieces of the Spanish art gallery and goes through a chronological tour of the different schools that make up the artistic panorama of the Prado Museum’s permanent collection, from the 12th century to the early years of the 20th century.
The exhibit consists of photographic reproductions of the highest quality, calibrated to the greatest detail to fully represent each pictorial piece protected by the Prado.
The images, mounted on panels almost two meters wide, are reproduced at actual real size, so that the small paintings are shown complete and the works that exceed that dimension are shown in one of their details, to reveal their magnificence.
The great masters that can be seen in this event of public art:
- Fra Angelico, Andrea Mantegna, Hieronymus Bosch, Tiziano, Raphael, El Greco, Joaquin Sorolla and, of course, Diego Velazquez and Francisco de Goya
Located in Madrid and opened to the public in 1819, the Prado National Museum is one of the most important museums in the world, with a collection of more than 8 thousand works, many of which are references of Western art. In 2023 it received more than 3 million visitors.
