Since 2018, wines from Guanajuato have won more than 230 awards in the main forums and publications, demonstrating their quality and potential.
One of the strategies of State Governor Diego Sinhue Rodriguez Vallejo for strengthening the local economy is to position wine not only as a good or product, but as an integrating agent of economic and tourism policy.
The head of the Secretary of Sustainable Economic Development –SDES-, Ramon Alfaro Gomez, said that the presence of the wine industry in Guanajuato must be taken advantage of to be exploited touristically and economically with marketing strategies.
He added that the internal economy is strengthened, wine tourism is promoted and knowledge of the processes related to grape cultivation and wine production is promoted.
Today Guanajuato is positioned in 4th. place in wine production, in 8th. place in industrial grape production nationwide and currently has 135 labels that have obtained more than 150 awards in recognized world competitions.
With 35 wineries focused on wine production in an area of 350 hectares available for vineyards in municipalities like:
- Dolores Hidalgo CIN, Guanajuato, Leon, San Miguel de Allende, San Felipe and Salvatierra
- Guanajuato ranks 4th. place in Mexico in wine production with 300 thousand cases a year
Guanajuato is increasingly positioning itself as a major wine producer and has gained strength in this area, advancing along the right path in improving quality, adapting varieties to market demand and technological modernization.
Collaborative work between society, private initiative and government will create a feeling of –terroir- among wine tourism actors, which will undoubtedly impact cultural and economic results.
The future of Guanajuato as a wine tourism destination in Mexico is to provide wineries with knowledge and infrastructure to create an innovative business model and new marketing channels, in addition to combining them into a Wine Cluster.
Guanajuato will continue to be the protagonist and benchmark of economic development by promoting viticulture as an engine of recovery in the State’s economic activity until it becomes a land of wines.
