The Gto Health System is positioned as a national example in the care of minors with rare or infrequent diseases.
The System invests between 75 to 110 million pesos per year to pay for the treatments of 30 minors with rare diseases.
On the occasion of World Rare Disease Day 2023, Dr. Daniel Alberto Diaz Martinez Secretary of Health announced that these pathologies are known as such because they are present in the minority from 1 to 5 per 100,000 inhabitants.
More than 7,000 different types of rare diseases are known in the world, of which only approximately 400 have specific treatment.
The General Health Council generated a list of 20 diseases that have been considered rare in Mexico and they are:
Mucopolysaccharidosis I Hurler
Mucopolysaccharidosis II Hunter
Mucopolysaccharidosis IV Morquio
Mucopolysaccharidosis VI Maroteaux-Lamy
Gaucher Disease Type I
Gaucher Disease Type II
Type III Gaucher disease
Fabry disease
Pompe disease
Turner Syndrome
Spina Bifida
Cystic Fibrosis
Hemophilia
Histiocytosis
Congenital Hypothyroidism
Phenylketonuria
Galactosemia
Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia
G6PD Deficiency
Glucose 6 Phosphate Dehydrogenase
Homocystinuria
Díaz Martínez added that the Gto Health System has 6 accredited medical units for the care of lysosomal diseases.
And they are the General Hospitals of:
- Celaya
- San Miguel Allende
- San Luis de la Paz
- Acambaro
- Leon Pediatric Specialty Hospital
- And the federal Regional High Specialty Hospital of El Bajio
Diaz Martinez considered that it is very important to make early diagnoses and give opportune treatments, since this depends on the patients achieving a better quality of life and reducing complications.
“In many patients this represents the difference between life and death”, said the Secretary of Health.
It is highly recommended that the population go to the nearest health units to have their routine check-ups, training and advice on these issues, when these diseases are identified in relatives or when they are suspected.
