Guanajuato is proud to promote -in Mexico and the world- 6 Magical Towns.
Three of them celebrate their tenth anniversary with this acknowldgement, inviting tourists to escape and live great stories with the people, customs and traditions of Jalpa de Canovas, Yuriria and Salvatierra.
In Jalpa de Canovas, Juan Jose Alvarez Brunel, Secretary of Tourism of Guanajuato, thanked the City Councils of these 3 Magical Towns, the Magical Town Committees, the entire value chain and the inhabitants for taking care of their tangible and intangible patrimony, for exalting the cultural and natural legacy, and for being so hospitable with tourists and visitors.
“These treasures were inherited by past generations and today, it is our duty to protect this great heritage, the heritage of Guanajuato, Mexico. Within the Tourism Promotion Strategy, these Magical Towns are promoted responsibly and work is being done with the tourism industry to position them,” said the Secretary of Tourism.
The Program that gave rise to the Magical Towns was created in 2001 as a national strategy for tourism development, aimed at structuring a complementary and diversified offer towards the interior of the country.
The 6 Magic Towns of Guanajuato are enrolled in this program.
Jalpa de Canovas is a picturesque town located in Purisima del Rincon, it was born as an hacienda in the 16th century and, today, it invites you to live a unique experience so that you forget about the daily routine and connect with nature surrounded by water , quinces and walnuts. Once, it was the Hacienda of Manuel Canovas, of which the manor house and the parish are preserved.
In this town, visitors will be able to taste walnut mole, quince cajeta, chard tamales, tomato paste, artisan jams and liqueurs.
We invite you to enjoy a tour of its streets and park on horseback or by bicycle, take a kayak ride in the Old Dam and Santa Eduviges Dam; or else, go hiking in the surroundings of the new Santa Efigenia dam; in this destination you will appreciate a walnut grove that has more than 1,200 trees. At the end of the day, the visitor can stay in the boutique or gallery-type hotels, where you can rest and have a relaxing massage.
Salvatierra is a destination with colonial charm, it is located in the center of Guanajuato, it is a region of poems and barns of gold, it is a fertile Magic Town, where the Lerma River flows proudly. This “First City of Guanajuato” has beautiful vegetation that keeps ancestral traditions and beautiful stories in its Porfirian mansions that surround the central garden.
Gastronomy is a must in this destination, the dishes range from the traditional “long” made with a handmade corn tortilla and a rich stew prepared by a traditional cook.
Salvatierra has more than 300 cataloged historical monuments including bridges, haciendas, convents and old mansions of traditional religious and civil architecture, where the Batanes Bridge, the Temple and Convent of San Angelo Marti, better known as the Temple of Carmen, stand out, as well as its unmissable Diocesan Sanctuary.
Yuriria has an amazing Lagoon, the first hydraulic work in Latin America, and the imposing former Agustino Convent dating from the year 1550. One of the main attractions is the Religious Architectural Heritage with exponents like as The Temple of the Lord of the Precious Blood of Christ.
Visitors can see 2 Protected Natural Areas such as La Laguna and Lake Crater, where species like the gray fox and the white-tailed deer dwell, they are also part of the migratory routes of birds like ducks and pelicans. Yuriria stands out for its tule fabrics as its main craft (basketry, mats and rugs), as well as shawls, items made from corn leaves or small wooden replicas of the canoes used in the lagoon and lake.
Its gastronomy is traditional, the Caldo Michi is a classic from the south of Guanajuato and, because of its fishing vocation, there are dishes such as frog legs, mole with charales. Other culinary expressions are wind fritters, peanut tamales, chickpea atole and the famous sweet bread known as oven fruit.
