The old home of the artists Olga Costa and Jose Chavez Morado in the Pastita Borough, celebrates 29 years of its transformation into an art museum and of integrating it to the network of art sites of the State Institute of Culture.
Pastita and the Museum
To celebrate, the museum hosts special activities among them a community workshop to analyze through dialogue and art the identity and the local patrimony of the Pastita section of Guanajuato and the museum.
There is a musical performance by the Ensamble Loading System, formed by Victor Casillas and Harry Preza, who present electro-acoustic atmospheres generated by algorithms in real time with analogue-organic rythms; as well as a virtual tour streamed on Facebook Live.
Since the XVI Century
The Museum is in the section of a property that included the Hacienda of Guadalupe in Pastita, wich dates back to the XVI Century. It was purchased by the artists in 1963.
In 1993 the museum was given as a donation to the Government of Guanajuato and it was inaugurated on April 2nd of that year.
More than 830 pieces
The museum has a collection of more than 830 pieces of art of different periods and technics, there is ancient furniture, tapestry of the XVII and XVIII Centuries, popular Mexican art objects, like embroidery, faith objects and ceramics.
In the top floor there is a permanent exhibit of a selection of oil paintings of both artists.
Home of Guanajuatenses
The temporary exhibitions hall was opened in 2007 and it holds works of Guanajuatense artists. There is a detachable mural made of mosaic with glass tesseras named “La Patria”.
Olga Costa was born in 1913 in Leipzig, Germany. Her family moved to Mexico in 1925.
IN 1933 she started her studies at the San Carlos Academy and two years later she married Jose Chavez Morado. During her life she created a large artistic production and received many awards.
The Mexican painter, engraver and muralist Jose Chavez Morado was born on January 4th 1909 in Silao.
Chavez studied in the National School of Plastic Arts, his first mural was made in the Veracruzana Teacher’s School. At the Alhondiga he painted murals with the topics:
“Abolition of slavery by Don Miguel Hidalgo”, “A song for Guanajuato” and “Presence of Guanajuato in the Mexican nation”.
The latest exhibits in the museum are:
“Urban Parasites” by Gilberto Esparza; “Resistance” by Marcela Armas; “History of the Eye” by Arturo Rivera; “Partitions” by Ana Quiroz and “Solving Times” a collection by Guanajuatense artists.
